Week 4

Part 1: Magic School Lesson Plan Generator

I chose standard PK.2.PC.1(Students will begin to understand that print carries a message by recognizing labels, signs, and other print in the environment). Magic School did an excellent job in creating a lesson plan to meet the criteria of this standard. The AI tool created a lesson that includes an introductory activity, examples for introducing the new material, guided practice that is monitored by the teacher, independent practice with an assessment piece to evaluate the student’s understanding.  The assessment was perfectly created for pre-k students with developmentally appropriate tasks and the assessment addressed the standard and was a great wrap up for the lesson.  I felt like this was a well designed lesson that included everything I would include in the lesson, except technology and interactive props to promote more engagement.  I would change the lesson to include both of these pieces.   I would use a boom card to assess understanding for each student at the end of the lesson and I would have the students wear a detective hat or give them binoculars or a magnifying glass to use while they are acting as “print detectives” to locate the print signs. I feel Magic School AI is an excellent tool for creating lesson plans.  The tool provides materials, introductory activities, hands-on activities that are developmentally appropriate, small group activities to be monitored by the teacher, and independent activities to be used as an assessment tool.  For this particular lesson the introductory activity included using cereal boxes, canned goods, and other items available that have familiar environmental print to use during circle time.  The lesson goes on to explain the students will be “print detectives” which makes the lesson engaging for the students.

Part 2: Magic School AI tool

The Magic School AI tool I chose to use is the song generator.  The tool creates custom songs based on topics and song tune of your choice.  I use songs for almost every topic I teach in my pre-k classroom and this is a perfect tool for incorporating a song, when I can not find one readily available. The song I chose to create is a song about environmental print labels to the tune of BINGO.  I could definitely see myself using this song when teaching about environmental prints in my classroom.  I would use the song as an introduction and practice tool not an assessment piece.  This would be a great song to write out on chart paper to have the students practice recognizing letters and words, and to create print awareness. The song is a great addition to the lesson I created above using Magic School.

Part 3: Reflection

Magic School is an AI tool that can help teachers create lesson plans or help them get started in planning a lesson if they are having trouble creating a lesson.  I will definitely be sharing this with my colleagues!  I feel like this can be a very useful tool to use when we are planning lessons together.  This tool can help teachers with a basic lesson that they can build upon, help us collaborate together, come up with new ideas to incorporate to our lessons, and enhance lessons we already have in place.  I have not used any AI tools to create lessons or activities in my classroom.  I will definitely be using Magic School and researching other AI tools to enhance my lesson planning.

Comments

  1. I am really glad that I read your blog. I had not seen the song generator part of the Magic School. I taught Pre-k a while back. This tool would be used many times in my pre-k classroom! Even with higher grades learning through music is something I truly believe leaves a mark.
