Week 5

PART 1 Professional development with universal design for learning: supporting teachers as learners to increase the implementation of UDL is a study to evaluate the benefits (if any) of teachers attending professional development to further their understanding and to effectively implement the Universal Design for Learning in their daily lessons.  The Universal Design for Learning, or UDL, is a framework for educators to used when designing lessons that is made up of three overarching principles, 9 guidelines, and 31 checkpoints to guide lesson planning. The Engagement, also known as the  “Why”principle, recognizes that all learners need to connect with their learning, sustain their efforts, and exercise self-regulation in order to reach their goals . The Representation, also known as the  “what” principle, supports the recognition network and extends learner engagement by representing information in various ways to accommodate sensory and genitive needs of the le...

Week 4

Part 1: Magic School Lesson Plan Generator I chose standard PK.2.PC.1(Students will begin to understand that print carries a message by recognizing labels, signs, and other print in the environment). Magic School did an excellent job in creating a lesson plan to meet the criteria of this standard. The AI tool created a lesson that includes an introductory activity, examples for introducing the new material, guided practice that is monitored by the teacher, independent practice with an assessment piece to evaluate the student’s understanding.  The assessment was perfectly created for pre-k students with developmentally appropriate tasks and the assessment addressed the standard and was a great wrap up for the lesson.  I felt like this was a well designed lesson that included everything I would include in the lesson, except technology and interactive props to promote more engagement.  I would change the lesson to include both of these pieces.   I would use a bo...

Week 2 Part 1, 2, and 3

Part 1 “Authentic intellectual work involves original application of knowledge and skills, rather than just routine use of facts and procedures. It also entails careful study of the details of a particular problem and results in a product or presentation that has meaning beyond success in school” (Newmann et al., 2007). AIW maximizes rigor for student learning, increases student interest, teachers take an in-depth amount of time to teach true understanding of the material, and equips students with an in-depth understanding to think critically, apply their learning, and promotes higher level thinking.  AIW is a very different framework from traditional teaching styles.  Traditionally teaching designs create assignments to reproduce information in the form of multiple choice tests, spelling tests, and matching answers.  The AIW framework allows for high quality discussion and short answer questions to help students develop an in-depth understand and allow them to pu...

Week 1 Part 3

Korb’s Triple E Framework Engage Technology should be integrated based on what we already know about good teaching and pedagogical practices (Kord, 2020).  Educators know the importance of “I do, we do, you do” and this activity allows for the teacher to demonstrate, then let the students do it together, and monitor as the student completes the map on their own, while offering support and guidance. The activities in this lesson and activity allow the students to remain engaged and focused during each step of the lesson.  The teacher will be available to direct and reteach as needed, as well as provide assistance to students who cannot complete the task on their own. Students will be given the chance to use their own creativity while they complete the map using the shape pieces on the slides presentation. Enhance Google maps is a technological tool to help students see the real world roads and buildings to help students make a real world connection with the community helpers le...

Week 1 Part 2

Technology Education and Pre-K Social Studies Curriculum ISTE standard Empowered Learner 1.1.d states students will understand fundamental concepts of how technology works, demonstrate the ability to choose and use current technologies effectively, and are adept at thoughtfully exploring emerging technologies. I will be using this ITSE standard combined with Oklahoma Social Studies standard PK.2.1 which states Explain that a map is a drawing of a place. During a teacher led lesson about community helpers, students will sort pictures of community helpers and non-community helpers using a Google Slides presentation.  After they have completed the sorting activity, the teacher will guide them in using google maps to identify the community helpers in their town. Once, the community helpers in the town have been located, the teacher will provide a blank map of the town drawn in a google slides presentation.  The students will use the shape pieces provided in the presentation to m...
